High vapour pressure de®cit in ̄uences growth, transpiration and quality of tomato fruits

چکیده
Plants were grown in two glasshouse compartments under two vapour pressure de®cit (vpd) levels: low vpd was obtained by increasing air humidity with a fogging system, and high vpd was obtained during sunny hours in a greenhouse where air humidity was not controlled. The mean value, of the six driest hours of the day concerning the growing period of the fruits considered, was 1.6 kPa under low vpd and 2.2 kPa under high vpd conditions. Over the whole experimental period, the difference in mean hourly temperature never exceeded 0.88C. The oldest leaves were removed to different extents in different plots to analyse whether a different leaf/fruit ratio could modify the effect of high vpd. Fruit growth and transpiration rates greatly varied during daylight hours; these variations were enhanced under high vpd condition. The increase in vpd produced a signi®cant reduction in fruit fresh weight and in fruit water content, and an increase in soluble solids, while fruit dry weight was not affected. High vpd also enhanced the variability of fruit weight. When more leaves were removed the effect of vpd on soluble solids and water content was less important. The study shows that during summer, as vpd increases from 1.6 to 2.2 kPa, effects can be observed both on tomato growth and quality characteristics. Therefore, an improvement of the control of vpd for the optimisation of greenhouse tomato production is discussed. # 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Predicting transpiration of shaded and non-shaded tomato fruits under greenhouse environments
Fruit water balance is determined by entry of sap through xylem and phloem, and losses due to back̄ow from fruits to other organs, and to transpiration. The latter, which may vary according to growing and climatic conditions, plays a signi®cant role in fruit water balance. To better understand and predict tomato fruit transpiration, measurements of the transpiration rate of shaded and nonshaded ...
متن کاملGenetic erosion of traditional varieties of vegetable crops in Europe: tomato cultivation in Valencia (Spain) as a case Study
Ever since the arrival of the tomato to Spain in the 16th century, great diversification of the crop has taken place, giving rise to a rich collection of varietal types. The ‘Comunidad Valenciana’, with its deep-rooted agricultural tradition, is one of the Spanish regions with the greatest diversity in traditional tomato varieties, characterised by their local adaptation and high fruit quality....

Indirect evidence suggests that water supply to fleshy fruits during the final stages of development occurs through the phloem, with the xylem providing little water, or acting as a pathway for water loss back to the plant. This inference was tested by examining the water balance and vascular functioning of ripening kiwifruit berries (Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis 'Hort16A') exhibiting a p...
متن کاملGreenhouse Tomato Production with High Saline Nutrient Solution Simulating a Re- circulating Irrigation System without Environmental Discharge
Increased tomato fruit quality in response to increased salinity is well documented (Li, 2000). However, the increased fruit quality is achieved at the expenses of severe yield losses mostly due to reduced fruit size (fresh weight) and increased incidence of physiological disorders such as blossom end rot (BER). The ability to minimize the negative effects of high salinity at the root level, wh...
متن کاملThe Effect of UV-C Irradiation on Rot Control and Postharvest Quality of Greenhouse Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Newton)
Tomato is one of the most important horticultural crops that is corruptible and susceptible to microbial contamination. In this study, the effect of UV-C at five different irradiation intensities (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 kJ/m2) on rot control and postharvest quality of greenhouse tomato was investigated. Tomato (cv. Newton) fruits were harvested from a commercial greenhouse at vine-ripe stage and aft...
